What is Low Testosterone or “Low-T”?
In men, testosterone is a key building block for masculine development and key features like greater muscle mass, deeper voice, and facial hair. In addition, testosterone is responsible for the growth of the genitals during adolescence, the production of sperm, driving libido and promoting a normal and healthy erection. In addition, testosterone can promote red blood cell production, enhance cognitive ability and improve mood.
Low testosterone or "low T" is when the body's testosterone hormone level drops below the medically acceptable optimal range for healthy people. This process of falling testosterone is commonly referred to as male menopause. Male menopause usually occurs in all men usually starting in the late twenties. However, there are other reasons for low testosterone, including but not limited to stress, alcohol and drug use, chronic illness, being overweight, and the use of certain prescription drugs.
As men age, the testicular mechanism responsible for the production of testosterone gradually becomes less effective, so testosterone levels begin to decline, dropping by about 1% every year, usually in their 30s and 40s. When men enter their 50s, they may begin to notice symptoms associated with low testosterone, including decreased libido, reduced energy, decreased vitality, decreased muscle mass and bone density, erectile dysfunction, and even anemia. In general, these symptoms associated with low testosterone are often referred to as hypogonadism, which means weakened testicular function. Medical researchers in the United States claim that Low T affects 3 to 7 million men. Unfortunately, this condition is still seriously missed, and only about 5-10% of men receive treatment.
Recent studies have shown that treatments such as testosterone replacement therapy or TRT may provide comprehensive benefits for men with hypogonadism, including improved mood, vitality, libido, bone density, cognitive function, muscle mass, and red blood cell production.
